I think Shinjuku is the absolute best area to stay: there are a lot of tourists, but the large population dilutes it; it has the most/cheapest Airbnb options, a lively enough environment, and Shibuya station is well-connected.
I've stayed in Shinjuku, Ueno, Akihabara, and Ginza.
All are also good spots.
I would recommend it if you want the cheap hostel route.
It had everything I needed; washer/dryer, storage space for luggage, private bed cubby (bring your own padlock), washer/dryer.

Load a card physically or in Apple Wallet.
Apple Wallet is easy and should get you around most city lines and public transport.
Useful for JR lines plus city-to-city travel in Japan without booking every ticket separately.
My rule of thumb: If you're visiting > 3 cities or are in Japan for > weeks, it's for sure worth.
You'll likely be taking Ubers (Go Taxi App is better) anyways, so no need for absolute local connectivity all the time (that's option B, where you buy all city <-> city routes a la carte and pay a la carte for local transport).
It's important to crunch these #s regardless.
JR Pass gives free access.
Otherwise it costs ~$10 and takes a little longer (line longer).
It's pretty walkable intra-city.
But not as an actual way to get from place to place across the massive city obv.
Ubers are on the cheaper side.
