Situation

My manager accidentally sent me private criticism meant for someone else, then deleted it and said it was the wrong chat. We have a one-on-one tomorrow, and now I know they’ve been discussing me. What do I say?

Task

Brainstorm a better response than the Claude suggestion.

i don’t think atharv is ready to lead this. he’s talented but gets defensive whenever he’s challenged

Manager

sorry, wrong chat

Claude suggestion

No worries — happens to all of us! Looking forward to our 1:1 tomorrow, and I'd love to talk through where you see me growing into more leadership opportunities.

The blindspot

The cheerful tone minimizes a meaningful breach.

It never clearly acknowledges that the employee saw the deleted criticism, reassures the manager immediately, and turns the employee’s discomfort into an eager self-improvement conversation before the manager has taken responsibility for what happened.

Lesson

A calm response can still name a breach. Reassurance is not a substitute for directness when a power imbalance is involved.
